Workshop on the topic of integrated security in Istanbul

During three days representatives of Fund "Sukhumi” participated in the workshop on the topic of integrated security which was held on Buyukada island, close to Istanbul, Turkey. The organizer of the workshop was Swedish women's organisation Kvinna till Kvinna. Participants of the workshop were representatives of non-governmental organizations of Southern Caucasus. Trainers of the workshop were Jane Barry (a human right activist and author, specializing in issues of security and sustainability of human rights defenders globally) and Tolekan Ismailova (the founding president and director of Kyrgyzstan’s Coalition for Democracy and Civil Society). Participants of the seminar talked about their fears, which all of us seldom talk about, but which concern us and live in us. There were defined threats existing in society, including administrative, legislative and financial pressure, discredit, threat of psychological and physical health, threat of family. There were elaborated concrete strategies for human right defender in order to provide security in specific cases. The work of the seminar was very fruitful. It will have positive impact on personal life and the work of every workshop participant. One of the trainers said - "When we have possibility to sincerely talk about our threats in a secure place, where people listen and support us it is like a light in the darkness and we understand that we are not alone and are able to support each other”.
